In the distant future, the desert planet Arrakis—also known as Dune—is the only source of a powerful substance called melange or spice, which is vital for space travel and grants psychic abilities. The Emperor assigns control of Arrakis to House Atreides, led by Duke Leto, taking it from their longtime enemies, the Harkonnens. Duke Leto’s son, Paul Atreides, is a gifted young man with mysterious powers. After a betrayal by the Emperor and Baron Harkonnen, Paul and his mother Jessica escape into the desert. There, they join the Fremen, the native people of Arrakis. Paul learns their ways and embraces his destiny as a messianic figure. He takes the name Muad’Dib, gains control of the spice, and leads a rebellion against the Harkonnens and the Emperor. In the end, Paul defeats them and becomes the new ruler of the known universe.
